I'm glad that
this has finally happened. I've long wondered just what is behind the House Chamber in the Capitol, and now that we can
see at least some of it, I think it's really cool. I don't have any aspirations to being Speaker, but I think the whole concept of parliamentary control and privilege is an interesting control on the legislature.
I've started using Google Homepage on Internet Explorer (I usually use Firefox, though), and one of the tabs I have on mine is full of quotes. It's almost overwhelming to a quote-collector like myself.

What is the purpose of having the room (instead of just an office) there...I mean, for late deliberations and such?
I think it's mainly in the likely case that the Speaker is from somewhere other than Austin. I think all the legislators get some sort of stipend for housing in the Austin area during the session because it would be impractical (especially back in the late-1800s) and expensive to travel back and forth from the Captiol to your district that might be several hours away (because we actually have a big state).
The Speaker's apartment specifically, I think, is just a perk of being Speaker (like a bigger office and staff).
So wait...the Speaker lives there? Like, with his family?
Texas is big? Like a giraffe big?
